The German Lutheran Church of Salem, on Sandy Run
[The German Protestant Society of Salem Church in Berckley County Orangebourgh District]
[Lutheran]
Site of the third meeting of the Union in 1788.
“By 1751, there was a Meeting House located in the vicinity of Sandy Run on the west side of the Congaree River and possibly very near the Catawba Indian Path. The church was well within the confines of the earlier Saxe Gotha Township. Calhoun County was created in 1908 from Lexington and Orangeburg Counties. Some of those of the list of petitioners of 1788 appear to have been residing in what is present-day Calhoun County; however, others appear to have been in the area around Granby.”

The German Lutheran Church of Bethel, on High Hill Creek
[The Protestant Society of Bethel Church in Lexington County Orangebourgh District Signed 4 January 1788]
[Lutheran]
“……. the Reverend John Gasser in 1754 mentioned that he was to preach at two churches in the fork --- one low in the fork and one higher up. It has been pretty well established that the one “higher up” was St. John’s, Pomaria. We think that the one “low in the fork” may have been Bethel. We had considered that it could have been (Mount) Zion on Twelve Mile Creek; however, that church is south of the Saluda River. Bethel is the only church which we can place in the “Fork” early enough.”

The German Protestant Church of Appii Forum, Cedar Creek
[German Protestant Church, called Appii Forum, on Cedar Creek, Richland County, Camden District, State of SC]
[Presbyterian]
“The church on Cedar Creek has been claimed by the Episcopalians, the Presbyterians, the Lutherans, the Baptists, and finally the Methodists. Most traditions have it that after the Weber Heresy, some of the families moved over Broad River and settled on Cedar Creek where a church was begun under the pastorate of the Reverend John Nicholas Martin. This was the church incorporated in1788 as Appii Forum. The Rubsamans appear in the census records of 1790 as Turnipseeds. For some years, Cedar Creek Church was known as DuBard’s Presbyterian. When Dr. Howe wrote his history, no trace of this church remained. It was located near the Fairfield County line. Lutheran records and Presbyterian records do not agree on the sequence of ministers. One source states that after the death of Reverend William Dubard, the church was served by the Reverends Penegar (Binnicker), Houch (Haucke), and Loutz. One source shows Peter Schmidt as the first pastor followed by John Nicholas Martin (1761-1767), Lewis Hocheimer (1765-1767), John Nicholas Martin (1767-1775), John G. Friederichs (1775-1777), Christian Haucke (1777), William Dubard (1777-1791), then the Methodists. This source does not show Binnicker, and Dubard was supposed to have died of smallpox during the Revolution. Binnicker is referred to as Dinninger in Hallman’s history. According to tradition in the area, the first recorded grant in the Cedar Creek community was to Christopher Meetz. Dubard’s Presbyterian Chapel was built in 1743 near where Cedar Creek flows into Broad River. After Dubard’s death, the church was served by German Protestant ministers. It is believed that the church was washed away in the flood on 1791. Cedar Creek Methodists built a church on the site of the present church. Bett’s history of Methodism states that a local church was formed in the Dutch Fork 20 miles above Columbia in the house of Needham Busby (d. 24 July 1840, over 90 years old).”

The German Lutheran Church of St. George, on Hard Labor Creek
[Lutheran]
“This area had been much uprooted during the American Revolution. Many of the earlier settlers remained loyal to the King of England and had moved to other areas. Claims filed after the War indicate that some had made their homes in Nova Scotia. Methodists took over the St. George Lutheran Meeting House ca. 1805 and changed the name to Tranquil, but on the 1820 map, it is Swamp Meeting House. [Greenwood County Sketches, Watson]”

The German Lutheran Church of St. Jacob, on Wateree Creek
[Orangebourgh District Newberry County The Protestant Society at Wateree Creek: St. Jacob’s Church]
[Lutheran]
“Wateree Creek, a tributary of Broad River, flows through what is now Richland County on down into Lexington County. Mills’ map of 1825 indicates that it is completely within the bounds of Lexington County. Several of the members are enumerated in 1790 in Orangeburgh District (North Part). There have been several changes in the county lines in this area. A part of Newberry was cut off into Lexington County in 1788 which may have resulted in the confusion of the description of the location of this church at the time of the Union. Part of the area between the Broad and Saluda Rivers (the Dutch Fork) was in Orangeburgh District at the time of Mouzon’s map published in 1775.”

[The Protestant Congregation of St. George’s Church on Indianfields]
[Presbyterian]
“Site of this church, located in Charleston District, Dorchester County, St. George’s Parish in 1788 is probably in what is present-day Dorchester County which was not created as a modern county until 1897 from Berkeley and Colleton Counties. Indian Field Creek and Cattles Creek are both tributaries of Edisto River, running from Colleton Co., through Orangeburgh Co., (in 1825). The main settlement appears to have been on the Colleton Co. side.”
