EBERHARD FULMER FAMILY
Contributed by
Carl W. Nichols
The Fulmer family of South Carolina came from the Reutlingen area in southwest Germany.  The family is traced back in this area to Jacob Vollmar who was married on 11 June 1651 in Eningen unter Achalm to Maria Schüle.  Jacob Vollmar in this marriage record is described as a Miller’s apprentice and is said to have been born in Dußlingen, the son of Albert Vollmar.  Maria Schüle was described as having been born in Austria, the daughter of Balthas Schüle.  The Eningen record reveals that Maria had previously been married to Hans Jäger.  The German Schüle family is the same as the Shealy family of South Carolina.

Before 1655 Jacob Vollmar moved his family from Eningen unter Achalm, a village on the east side of Reutlingen, to nearby Unterhausen.  The Unterhausen church records describe Jacob Volmar as a Miller who died on 20 July 1669.  After his death, Anna Maria was married for the third time in Unterhausen on 2 February 1671 to Andreas Sagmuller (Miller).  She died on 7 November 1683 at the age of 54 yrs

Information from the German records of this family was researched and kindly provided by Siegbert Frick of Lichtenstein, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Eberhard Vollmer obtained a 300 acre bounty grant on waters of Crims Creek then in Lexington District (Pomaria, SC).  This land is the site of the old Fulmer Cemetery (Epting-Stoudemire Cemetery in Newberry Cemeteries, Vol. 1) in which are found the markers of some of the descendants of Johannes Vollmer, son of Eberhard Vollmer.

Further details on this family may be obtained in "Fulmers of the Dutch Fork," published by Oliver Bryan Fulmer in 1995.

Johann Jakob Vollmer was born 21 January 1744 in Unterhausen, the son of Eberhard Ludwig Vollmer and Agnes Meck.  He died before 1797.  Jacob Fulmer was Captain of a Dutch Fork militia unit in 1781 and 1782 under Col. Philemon Waters during the Revolutionary War (Stub Indent No. 1188X). After the War he settled in the Macedonia Lutheran Church area of the Dutch Fork of Lexington County, SC.  He obtained several early state land grants in this area and owned part of the 400 acre land grant of Wendel Shealy.  This area is the site of the Fulmer Family Cemetery (Lake Murray Option No. 563, Lake Murray Records). This cemetery is located at the edge of Lake Murray at the end of R. B. Baker Road.  The descendants of the son, Adam Fulmer, lived in this immediate vicinity.

A popular tradition is that Jacob Fulmer married an Indian maiden named Nancy Lightfoot.  However, it was passed down by Mary Ann Amick Alewine, a granddaughter of Capt. Jacob Fulmer, that the wife of Capt. Jacob Fulmer was Nancy Leitze.  Nancy Leitze was born Anna Maria Agnes Leuze on 8 December 1743, the daughter of Jacob Leuze and Anna Maria Schuler.  Nancy was a commonly used name for Agnes.  The Leuze (or Leitze) family had come to SC in 1749 from Eningen unter Achalm, a town adjacent Reutlingen, in the south of Germany.  As Mary Litecey, she obtained a 100 acre land grant of 1774 in the Macedonia Lutheran Church area near the Saluda River.  Later surveys and deeds indicate her grant as land of Jacob Fulmer.

In addition to the land grants of Jacob Fulmer, Sr., there were also early statehood grants to Jacob, Jr. and Mathias Fulmer.  John, Aberhart, and Adam Fulmer are shown as owning land in the same area on several land surveys.

A. Jacob Fulmer, Jr., born about 1760, died 23 January 1839 (79 yrs. old), married 1) unknown; married 2) 17 August 1813, Elizabeth Able, born 1780.  Served during Revolutionary War under Gen. Pickens and engaged in most of the battles in SC including Eutaw Springs, Musgrove’s Mills, King’s Mountain, and Cowpens (“The South Carolinian,” issue of 12 April 1839).  In 1787 Jacob Fulmer obtained a 100 acre grant on Horsepen branch of Camping Creek.  In 1794 the adjacent land was surveyed (336 acre survey of Ulrick Mayer) showing this tract as land of Jacob Fulmer, Jr.
