John Cook was born between 1747 and 1755 in South Carolina and died between 1835 and 1840 in Prince William’s Parish, SC. A Revolutionary soldier, his pension application #S-39332, can be located in the National Archives, Washington, DC. He first applied in Charleston, SC [Pension Rolls 10 September 1819] but was dropped from the Pension Rolls was re-instated on 9 April 1824. This second Pension Application is the one on file at the National Archives and shows his service record of 3 years, serving as Private in SC’s Second Continental Line commanded by Colonel Isaac Mott of General Moultrie’s Brigade. He was discharged 13 July 1778. It is believed that this John Cook is the progenitor of this Cook family and had sons named Gadi, Leavie, Thomas and William.

Gadi J. Cook
Gadi J. Cook was born between 1784 and 1790 and died in January 1848. He married 1) Priscilla Brewer born about 1790 and died 10 July 1832. He married in July or Septmeber 1834, 2) Barbary Margaret Crosby born 22 September 22 and died December 1892. [Son, Francis Asberry Cook was Administrator of her last will and testament. Among the content of her Estate was a check for $36.00 from the US Government. There were two applications among the packets at the National Archives based on the military service of Gadi Cook in the War of 1812, one for Bounty Land and the other a Widow’s Pension.] Gadi Cook enlisted as a Private at McPhersonville, SC on 30 June 1812 in Colonel Youngblood’s SC Militia, Captain William Walter, Company Commander, honorably discharged 1 November, 1812 in Beaufort, SC.
From the 1830 census period and July of 1832, Gadi and Priscilla were counted among the inhabitants of Prince William's Parish. After Priscilla’s death, the family moved near Rantowle's, SC on the Stono River about 15 miles from Charleston.

in CSA, 11th Regt., Co. E. His name then appears on the Tax Auditor’s Records of Beaufort
District, 1865-1877.

Hampton County, SC; married Elizabeth E. Hughey born between May 1850- 1855, died after
1900, daughter of James Hughey. [Hampton County Court Records 10 February 1883 shows
James Hughey deeded 66 acres “to my daughter, Eliza E. Cook.”] “Big Joe” Cook and a Mr.
Hughey reportedly were buried in “Gil Heap's place" near Cummings but a burial site has not
been positively located. In October 1990, deer hunters rediscovered the Hughey Family
Cemetery but no stone were remaining. “Big Joe” and Eliza Cook were enumerated in the 1880
census as living in Peeples, Hampton, SC.

Reddin/Redding Cook
Reddin/Redding Cook was born 1816 and died after 1880; married 1) Unknown and married 2) Sarah Delilah Rowell. Reddin/Redding Cook enlisted in February 1862 (CSA) at Camp Gist, Charleston, SC, age 46. He served in the 24th SC Infantry, Company D; in December 1863 was reported sick in tent; was reassigned to Captain W. J. Gooding's company when the 24th Infantry was consolidated with the 16th SC Infantry to form Company I on the 16 January 1864; paroled at Greensboro, NC on 1 May 1865; honorable discharge.
