Columbia Woman Is Fatally Burned Trying to Build Fire.
A Columbia woman died from burns early Friday morning after trying to start a fire in an open fire place.  Richland County Sheriff's office, summoned to the scene at 7:20 yesterday morning, found the body of Mrs. Julia Blizzard, 63, on the rear porch of her home at 2015 Broad River Road.  Officers said Mrs. Blizzard apparently was the victim of her
own blazing clothing, which caught fire while attempting to build a fire in the dining room fire place.  Four other persons, including the victim's husband, were in the house at the time, officers said.  One man; identified as W. P. Hinson, was slightly burned when he tried to smother the flaming clothing of the victim with other clothing.  The other people in the house were asleep at the time of the accident; said officers.  Pieces of burned clothing on the floor of the dwelling indicated Mrs. Blizzard apparently fled from the dining room into the kitchen, the back into the dining room and onto the back porch, officers said.  She was a life-long resident of Richland County where she was a member of the Rosewood Baptist Mission.  She is survived by her husband, John Blizzard of Columbia, two sons, Colie L. Blizzard and William L. Blizzard, both of Columbia; one daughter, Mrs. Ethel B. Campbell of Columbia; four brothers, John Miles, Henry Miles, Hampton Miles, and Charlie Miles, all of Columbia; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Rosewood Baptist Mission, conducted by the Rev. William Faircloth and the Rev. A. L. Page. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Memorial Park.  The body will be in Thompson Funeral Home until 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon when it will be taken to the residence at 2015 River Drive.

Paul E. Buyers, returned to Brazil a few months later to help supervise construction of the building. Mrs. Buyers was a graduate of Winthrop College.  People’s Central Institute, a Methodist missionary enterprise, is a social-educational-evangelistic center at the food of  “Shantytown Hill” in a neglected part of Rio. It is near the docks, just a five minutes walk from a mill where 5,000 persons are employed.  It offers a grade school, night classes in adult education, boys’ and girls’ clubs, classes for the deaf and dumb, sports activities, and in cooperation with the Federal health department, free dental and medical clinics.  The new Buyers building will provide classrooms for 600 students.  Alumni and other Brazilian citizens have contributed $50,000 toward the memorial, and Methodists of the North Texas conference are contributing funds through the program of Advance for Christ and His Church.

Falling Plaster Death to Woman.
Mrs. Lavinia Cooper Suffers Fatal Burns.
Mrs. Lavinia Cooper, 1915 Huger Street died at Columbia Hospital yesteray morning a 9:30 o'clock from burns about the body and face she sustained early Sunday Morning when she caught fire from a lamp in her bedroom. Mrs Cooper was terribly burned, her face and arms being in a crisp. All parts of the body bear marks of the flames. Sunday morning aboaut 6 o'clock occupants of the home heard a noise in the room of Mrs. Cooper and a few moments later groans were heard. The room door was locked, but her sister Mrs. G. F. Nelson and Mr. Nelson rushed to the door and broke it down. Upon entering they discovered Mrs. Cooper in flames and in great agony. She had evidentaly just got up, being in her night clothes. The flames were estinguished and the worman rushed to a hospital wehre it was see that her condition was critical. From the condition of the room and facts learned from members of the family it seems that as Mrs. Cooper was dressing part of the overhead plastering in the room fell upon her, knocking her unconscious and upsetting the table lamp she had either in her hand or on the table. Two patches of the plastering fell, causing injury to Mrs. Cooper. Her head was cut open on the side, showing that the plastering had struck her. Mrs. Cooper was 42 years of age and had made her home with her sister-in-law Mrs. C F Nelson, since the death of her husband a number of years ago. She had been crippled since early childhood, but otherwise was in good health. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Nelson, two half sisters, Sallie Goodale and Mary Arrons, one brother Sam R Cooper. As far as I know Lavina never married and I am not yet aware of a half-sister by the name of Mary Arrons.

Dropped Dead.  Mr. Emanuel Daniels Expires in His Son’s Arms – a Sad Death.
Yesterday about 2 o’clock Mr. Emanuel Daniels, a well known Richland farmer, about 41 years of age, who manages the old Hampton Millpond place about four miles from the city, died very suddenly.  He had been out on the farm during the morning, and while out on the place began to feel very badly.  He started for the house, and managed to cross the threshold.  Then he staggered to his son, fell in his arms and expired in a few moments.  The cause of his untimely death is unknown, but it is supposed to have been heart disease.  Mr. Daniels leaves a wife and nine children, all of the latter being girls save two, with nothing to live upon save the crop in the ground on the farm. His remains will be held for a day or two awaiting the arrival of his brother from the up country.  [Note: He actually left ten children and was buried in the Kelly Cemetery.]

Fatal Accident
Mr. George W. Daniels was killed by the accidental bursting of his gun about half-past 11 o’clock Saturday night. Coroner Scott held an inquest on his body on Sunday and the jury returned a verdict of death from the accidental bursting of his gun while going on a hunt. Mr. Fred Friday, the principal witness, testified that he and Mr. Daniels left the city Saturday evening to go down the Bluff road to the Arthur place to hunt. About 11:30 o’clock that night they had left the road and gone into an open field. As they were walking along witness heard an explosion, and looking round, saw Daniels fall. Daniels’s gun fell some distance from him with the barrel bursted, and there was a wound in Daniels’s cheek. He died almost instantly. Mr. Friday came to Columbia and gave notice of the accident. Deputy Coroner Stratton had the body brought to the city and placed in the Independent Engine house, where Coroner Scott held the inquest. A piece of the gun barrel was taken from Mr. Daniels’s cheek after his death. The deceased leaves a wife and six children. The funeral took place yesterday. [He was buried in the Kelly Cemetery.]
