Old Columbia Public Burial Ground – consisted of the entire city block bounded by Senate, Pendleton, Wayne and Pulaski Streets. Thousands of graves existed at this site, as it was the primary burial ground for Columbia residents during the first half of the nineteenth century. According to Julian A. Selby’s book “Memoriabilia and Anecdotal Reminiscences of Columbia, SC.”, all classes and races were interred there. It was closed in 1856 and part of it was destroyed by railroad construction at the turn of the twentieth century. Selby recalled that the tombstones were cleared away and although a contract was mad eto move the bodies, apparently none ever were. One hundred years later a H.U.D. Public project was constructed over the remaining part of the cemetery. The only specific individuals known to be buried there are the twenty four state asylum patients herein listed. Unfortunately, the rest are anonymous, including several hundred Irish laborers who perished during the construction of the Columbia Canal. LAT. N 33-59-47, LON. W 81-02-31.
